TLI (Toastmasters Leadership Institute) is District 84's twice-a-year Club Officer Training event. The summer session is for officers taking office July 1; the winter session is the mid-term refresher.
When it happens
- Summer TLI: Typically June or early July. Aligns with new officer terms.
- Winter TLI: Typically January or February. Refreshes officers mid-term and catches anyone who took office mid-year.
What's taught
Each club officer role has its own training track:
- President — running effective meetings, club leadership, succession planning
- VP Education (VPE) — Pathways oversight, mentoring, speech contest coordination, member development planning
- VP Membership (VPM) — recruitment, application processing, retention strategy
- VP Public Relations (VPPR) — social media, club website, community visibility, press
- Secretary — record-keeping, meeting minutes, club business filings
- Treasurer — dues collection, Toastmasters International payments, club budget
- Sergeant at Arms (SAA) — meeting logistics, equipment, venue management
Beyond officer-specific tracks, TLI offers cross-cutting sessions on Distinguished Club Program goal-setting, club coaching, leadership advancement (for members eyeing area director and beyond), and Pathways topics for VPEs.
Why officers should attend
Sending four or more officers to TLI earns the club credit toward Distinguished Club Program (DCP). Clubs that send a full slate of seven officers earn extra district-level recognition. More importantly: officers who attend TLI consistently report feeling more confident in their roles and more connected to the broader district.
