I joined Toastmasters in 2006 at my supervisor's encouragement. At the time, I was so intimidated by speech contests that I deliberately chose the leadership track to avoid competing. Then COVID changed everything. Zoom and a webcam created a comfortable, low-pressure environment where I finally felt ready to give speech contests a try. It was just me, alone in a room, speaking to a camera—and that made all the difference. In 2021 and 2022, I earned three second-place finishes at the District level: one in Humorous Speech and two in Evaluation. So, what has Toastmasters done for me? Early in my journey, I developed strong time management skills. As the years passed, I gained confidence, but even more importantly, I developed self-awareness. I learned to listen—to truly listen—and that's an art in itself. Toastmasters has been an incredible journey of continuous learning, personal growth, and the discovery of strengths I never knew I had.
